While his actual involvement in real-life cheating was shrouded in mystery, there was always a teasing undertone to his stories—hinting at experience beyond performance.

My time in Los Angeles often included gatherings at the historic Farmer’s Market, well before it became the bustling commercial hub it is today. The place once played host to a colorful assemblage of gamblers, hustlers, and retired cardsharps—many of whom held strong opinions about Nash’s authenticity.
Among these old-timers, most dismissed Nash as a mere performer. Yet, when pressed, few had ever actually witnessed his live shows except “Phil H,” a former cheater who quietly admitted Nash possessed at least one move that “could get the money.”
Whether he ever put those skills to use outside the spotlight may remain unknown, but Nash’s live performances and televised acts established him as an undisputed master in his field. Even after his passing in 2009, new stories surfaced—including accounts that he had once assisted Canadian authorities with apprehending notorious card cheats in British Columbia.

Despite facing increasing health challenges later in life, including arthritis, Nash was revitalized every time he took the stage. I recall watching him backstage at a Sacramento convention, visibly anxious, applying lotion to soothe his hands before his act. But once he was under the lights, he transformed—delivering flawless, intricate card handling to a roomful of skeptical magicians.
His stage presence was unmatched, drawing standing ovations and admiration from peers until the very end of his career.
When the Student Surprised the Master: A Memorable Card Trick

But on this occasion, thanks to a move I had just mastered that allowed me to glimpse each player’s cards as they were dealt, I foiled his trick by instantly naming every hole card at the table. Nash, always quick-witted, responded with delight—relishing the rare moment when the tables were turned on him.

Years later, while working on the film Shade as a technical consultant and second-unit director, I developed a new sleight to visibly transform a 5 Card Poker hand in full view. The innovation allowed for immediate inspection of the cards post-effect and quickly became the subject of intrigue at the Magic Castle.
News of the technique reached Nash, who soon witnessed a demonstration by another card expert. The old master, ever enthusiastic about advancements in the art, appreciated the spirit of invention and camaraderie the magic community fostered.

Whether Nash ever truly operated on the wrong side of the felt is a matter for speculation. What remains indisputable is the joy, wonder, and respect he inspired—a true gentleman who lived up to his stage name until the very end.
