While novice players might see a hand where four aces are defeated by a royal flush and immediately suspect foul play, veterans simply chalk it up to another unbelievable memory. Interestingly, professional cheats favor subtlety over spectacle, steering clear of outcomes that would draw unwanted attention.

During one day, we visited another friend to view his collection of gambling relics. That evening, my friend had tickets to a show at the Bellagio, while I planned to dine with Mike and Lisa Close at a buffet. Unfortunately, illness forced them to cancel last-minute, leaving me alone in Vegas with no concrete plans.
This kind of solitude in Las Vegas is familiar—and sometimes perilous—but I knew the city was brimming with fellow magicians as the convention approached. Curious, I decided to check out the Rio before officially moving there for the event.
Wandering through the hotel, I searched for acquaintances. After a quick chat with a colleague at the bar who soon departed with his partner, I was left on my own again. It was nearing 9 PM, so I resolved to find the convention center. Halfway down the hallway, I noticed a blackjack expert friend of mine taking a smoke break. As soon as I greeted him, he whisked me away, pressed a ticket into my hand, and led me directly into the Penn & Teller Theatre—just as the show was beginning.
For the next hour and a half, I enjoyed a world-class performance, still marveling at how I found myself there. Afterwards, as we mingled with mutual friends in the lobby, the mystery deepened.
When I finally asked my friend how he managed to arrange all this, he looked confused. He reminded me about a message he’d posted on a magician’s online forum, specifically inviting me to meet him at 9 PM outside the Penn & Teller Theatre for just this occasion. Despite not seeing the invitation—and after a series of completely unplanned events—I ended up precisely where I needed to be, at the exact right moment.

This tale sounds stranger than fiction. Many people struggle to believe it—my friend included, who remains convinced it was all orchestrated. Pulling Back the Curtain: When Luck Steals the Show
On another occasion, deep in a Los Angeles basement, I had the opportunity to work with a top-tier actor preparing for a role in a film about gambling. Alongside one of the most skilled magicians I know, I demonstrated some classic card sleights and effects to fire up his imagination.
At the end of the session, the actor asked to see something truly authentic. I turned to his brother, asking him to shuffle the deck and deal five-card poker hands at random. Unknown to them, I had already palmed a straight flush, and executed a switch when I received my hand. Fuelled by excitement, everyone around the table (including my magician friend) examined their hands, confident they could win.
To the group’s astonishment, I revealed my unbeatable straight flush. The others then revealed a flush, a full house, and four of a kind—hands that, by any account, should rarely appear together in a single deal.
My fellow magician, an expert in sleight of hand, was baffled because he had seen the cards handled only by the actor’s brother, completely missing my stealthy switch—so the “trick” remained a puzzle to him.
The truth is, while I controlled my own outcome, the rest was true random chance. Their incredible hands could have turned out ordinary, but fate made the moment unforgettable. It was pure, serendipitous luck at work.
